| We
went from Willits up Hwy 101 to the Avenue of the Giants. We did the
same trip last year by car but it is so much more awesome by bike.
Haley began to get into photography today and we really enjoyed the
redwoods. We were heading up to the Trinity mountains and had a choice
of going up to Eureka and taking the short route or the longer more
scenic route. Haley voted for the more scenic route as it was more
likely to be warm as it was farther from the coast. We went from Arcata
down Hwy 36 to Hwy 3 to Hwy 299. The scenery was amazing but the trip
was getting longer then we wanted. We kept pushing on and we were
with in about 40 miles or so when we saw the brown sign that said
“24 miles to Big Flat” which was close to our destination.
We looked at each other and mutually decided to go for it. About 10
minutes up the road it started to be speckled with gravel, then another
10 minutes some spots of dirt and about10 minutes later it was all
dirt. We were too far down the road to give up so we went for it. The
GPS did not recognize our route and the only sign of promises was
the occasional signs that said X miles to the county road. Well about
15 minutes later we finally crest the top of the Trinity mountains
via what turned out to be a dirt forest access road. Just over the
top was a beautiful waterfall that we enjoyed very much as we stopped
for pictures and a short break. We did manage to find some humor in
our situation as we joked about our off road adventure. Continuing
down the mountain at about 5 miles per hour we finally saw sign of
human life as we were passed by a dirt bike coming up from the other
side. After somewhere around an hour and a half we finally got a signal
from the GPS saying 5 minutes to the county road. As we approached
the county road we were greeted by two 8 foot piles of gravel and
sand blocking us from the asphalted county road that was just beyond
our reach. This road block was just enough to get us going for about
10 seconds till we saw the 10 foot space to the left that gave us
access to our much awaited black top pathway to freedom. Well it was
another 20 minutes to our destination but we arrived still in good
spirits and Haley was determined to take charge and cook dinner and
set up house in our cabin. She was great and I was very proud. |
